Get Ready for Moving Day | Packing & Prep Advice from Harbour City Movers
Moving day doesn’t need to be stressful, we’ve helped hundreds of Kiwis move with ease across Tauranga and the North Island. With a bit of planning and preparation, you’ll be ready to go before the truck even pulls up.
Here’s our step-by-step guide to help make your move smooth from start to finish:
1. Plan Ahead
-
Book Early: Secure your move date with us as early as possible—especially during weekends and end-of-month periods which are high demand.
-
Declutter: Go room-by-room and donate, sell, or toss anything you don’t want to take with you.
-
Notify Important Contacts: Let your utility providers, banks, NZ Post, and any subscriptions know about your address change.
2. Pack Smart
-
Start Packing Early: Begin with items you don’t use daily (like seasonal clothes or decor).
-
Label Everything: Clearly mark boxes with the room name and a brief description of contents.
-
Keep Boxes Light: Heavy items like books should go in small boxes. Lighter items can fill bigger ones.
-
Wrap Breakables Properly: Use bubble wrap, packing paper, or towels to cushion fragile items.
3. Get Your Essentials Ready
-
Pack a First Night Box: Include essentials like toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, phone chargers, toilet paper, and bedding.
-
Important Documents: Keep passports, IDs, and moving paperwork in a safe place—ideally with you during the move.
4. Prepare the Property
-
Disassemble Furniture in Advance: If you’re taking apart beds, tables, or shelving, do it the day before unless you’ve arranged for our team to help.
-
Secure Pets & Kids: Arrange care or a safe space for pets and children on moving day to avoid added stress.
-
Clear Accessways: Make sure driveways, hallways, and entrances are free of obstacles to speed up the loading process.
5. On the Day
-
Be Ready When We Arrive: Have boxes packed and labeled, and furniture prepared if needed.
-
Do a Final Walkthrough: Check every room, cupboard, garage, and outdoor area to make sure nothing’s left behind.
-
Stay Hydrated & Take Breaks: Moving is physical—even if you’re not lifting. Keep water handy and take a moment to rest when needed.
6. Once You Arrive
-
Direct the Unload: Let us know where you’d like furniture and boxes placed in your new home.
-
Unpack Essentials First: Start with your "first night box," beds, and kitchen basics.
-
Celebrate! You did it. Welcome home.
